Sepsis is your own body’s response to an infection in your body that has spread well beyond its original location. If the infection resists antibiotic treatment because your body is weaker than usual there is a greater chance of sepsis developing. It is possible for any infection in any part of the body to trigger sepsis. However, infections in the lungs the abdomen, the pelvis and the urinary tract are the most common sites to trigger potentially fatal sepsis.
